CHIESA SS LORENZO SILVESTRO RUFFINO
Risalente al XVII secolo la chiesa parrocchiale dedicata a S. Lorenzo, S. Silvestro e S. Ruffino fu costruita da maestranze locali con materiali costruttivi uniformi agli altri edifici del centro storico di Massa Fermana.
Le facciate esterne sono in laterizio e quella principale di ingresso è in stile romanico. Il portale è costituito da una volta a botte sostenuta da una coppia di lesene e un archivolto incornicia l’arco impreziosito da decorazioni floreali. La parte superiore della facciata presenta una trifora e un cornicione composto di mattoni sagomati. Il campanile è posizionato sul lato opposto all’ingresso principale e fu sicuramente costruito successivamente rispetto alla chiesa come si rileva dalla diversa colorazione del laterizio. La chiesa è a pianta rettangolare, con tre navate e due absidi. L’abside di fondo è di forma semiottagonale e risulta essere l’elemento originario e più antico di tutta la costruzione: vi si accede tramite una piccola apertura.
La chiesa ospitava le opere dei Crivelli prima dei lavori di restauro dell’edificio a seguito del terremoto del 2016. Attualmente è possibile ammirare la statua dell’Addolorata posizionata a destra dell’altare maggiore della chiesa e la bellissima opera di Sebastiano Ghezzi, Assunzione della Vergine con i santi Giuseppe, Francesco, Diego e Ruffino(?) (circa 1607-1610) commissionata da Guarniero Guerrieri. La Vergine assume l’atteggiamento tipico dell’“Immacolata”, alloggiata dentro un involucro luminoso che allude alla sfera celeste, statica nella sua posizione e circondata dagli angeli che porgono due corone verso il suo capo già incoronato: la simbologia richiama il suo potere sulle tre Chiese (celeste, purgante e terrestre) e quindi al ruolo di mediatrice (“Immacolata-Assunta-Mediatrice”) tipico della predicazione francescana. Nella parte bassa dell’opera ci sono gli apostoli e i titolari della cappella: san Giuseppe, san Francesco e San Diego d’Alcalà come testimoni, e all’estrema destra un vescovo mitrato (probabilmente San Ruffino).
Dating back to the 17th century, the parish church dedicated to S. Lorenzo, S. Silvestro and S. Ruffino was built by local workers with construction materials similar to the other buildings in the old town of Massa Fermana.
The external facades are in brick and the main entrance is in Romanesque style. The portal consists of a barrel vault supported by a pair of pilasters and an archivolt that frames the arch embellished with floral decorations. The upper part of the facade has a mullioned window and a cornice made of shaped bricks. The bell tower is positioned on the opposite side to the main entrance and was certainly built later than the church as can be seen from the different colors of the bricks. The church has a rectangular shape, with three naves and two apses. The back apse is semi-octagonal in shape and appears to be the original and oldest element of the whole building: it is accessed through a small opening.
The church housed the works of the Crivellis before the restoration work on the building following the 2016 earthquake. Currently it is possible to admire the statue of Addolorata positioned to the right of the main altar of the church and the beautiful work by Sebastiano Ghezzi, Assumption of the Virgin with Saints Joseph, Francis, Diego and Ruffino(?) (about 1607-1610) commissioned by Guarniero Guerrieri. The Virgin assumes the typical attitude of the “Immaculate”, housed inside a luminous casing that alludes to the celestial sphere, static in her position and surrounded by angels who offer two crowns towards her already crowned head: the symbology recalls her power over three Churches (celestial, purgative and terrestrial) and therefore to the role of mediatrix (“Immaculate-Assumption-Mediatrix”) typical of the Franciscan preaching. In the lower part of the work there are the apostles and the owners of the chapel: Saint Joseph, Saint Francis and Saint Diego d’Alcalà as witnesses, and on the far right a mitered bishop (probably Saint Ruffino).
